First up, prepare your parcel. Start by wrapping a gift for the bride-to-be (experience voucher, gag gift, an item you know she would adore). From here, wrap as many layers as there are guests' attending - adding in small prizes as you go. When it's time to play, this beautiful parcel of yours is passed from person to person. This continues until the music stops; at which point the person holding the parcel gets to unwrap a layer. The lucky 'un-wrapper' takes their gift or completes the task before the music starts again. This is repeated (pass the parcel, music stops, layer unwrapped) until the special gift at the end is revealed (by the bride-to-be herself)! Want to mix things up a little? Why not put together a cheeky parcel (filled with naughty riddles, cheeky chocolates and other saucy items), turn it into a drinking game, or stick to one large gift only - playing 'pass the prize' instead!

The Date Night Game (Quick Overview)
A sweet game that results in beautiful memories! To play, participants simply have to write down a date idea for the bride and her partner. This could be anything from 'go for a bike ride together' to 'visit your local bookstore and pick out a book for each other'. These ideas are placed into a jar or stuck into a book, and gifted to the hen at the end of her celebration. The happy couple can then make their way through each suggestion in their 1st year of marriage (and beyond!). Want to mix things up a little? This game can also encourage story telling (ask guests to tell the story behind why they wrote down their particular date idea), involve a little mystery (seal each suggestion in an envelope, and the couple chooses a date at random) or even be themed (with different options for holidays, seasons or moods).

Playing the Date Night Game
YOU WILL NEED:
A mason jar (or similar), date night cards, pens/pencils and, if you wish, a date jar sign (a great way to highlight the game and bring guests to the table).
PREPARATION:
First we need to prepare some game cards. There are three main ways to do this:
- Ready-made cards: Grab a pre-made digital download that can be printed at your local print shop
- DIY it: create your own design on the computer and print off for the party
- Paper & pens: offer small, blank pieces of paper
See the images below for inspiration:
Now it's time to set the table.
Pick an area of your venue that is easily accessible. Place your table there and display the mason jar, pens/pencils, cards and sign on top of it.
An easy way to draw guests to your date card game?
Frame and hang your sign on the wall right behind your table (as pictured below). This way it can't be missed!
Handy Hint:
Leave instructions on the table as well. We like to include these on the actual date cards, however an overview of the game could be written out and printed off instead.
This extra bit of preparation will mean party-goers can take part in this activity at any time, without you having to explain what to do. Win/win!
HOW TO PLAY
As mentioned above, you may like to just set up the table and leave it at that. Guests will make their way over in their own time, filling out fun date ideas as they go.
On the flip side, you may like to direct guests to the table as they arrive (or with an announcement to the group).
When doing so, explain that you're on a mission to give the soon-to-be bride and groom a variety of date ideas for their first year of marriage. Guests can help by:
- Heading over to the table at some point during the event
- Writing down new date night ideas. These could be their best tips and tricks, or their favourite places to go for a special day or night.
- Placing the ideas into the provided jar, which will be gifted to the hen at the end of her party
EXAMPLE DATE JAR IDEAS INCLUDE:
- Go for a picnic (where the bride packs surprise food for the groom and vice versa)
- Visit fancy restaurants
- Have a mini game night (where a card game, board game or trivia are all welcome)
- Do something completely different together - such as magic school!
- Go for a bike ride
- Visit your local bookstore. Pick out a couple of books for each other (no peeking!) and reveal your choices whilst enjoying a coffee or hot chocolate at a nearby café.
- Explore the great outdoors with a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike
- Sample wine and enjoy each other's company with a special winery tour day (or DIY tasting at home)
- Take on a home DIY project together
- Put your problem-solving skills to the test with an escape room experience for two
- Give back to your beautiful community by volunteering for a local charity together
- Visit a location that has had a positive impact on your relationship (whether it be where you had your first date, or where you sat under the stars last year)
- Tap into your thrill-seeking side with a trip to your local adventure/theme park
- Take a cooking class together and learn to make a new dish
- Hit the beach for sunrise or sunset - there's something about stunning colours reflecting on the open sea that just screams romance
- What was your favourite date idea from this jar? Do it a second time!
Alternative Ways to Play this Date Night Game
MYSTERY IDEAS
Add a touch of mystery to the game by sealing each idea in an envelope. On date night, the couple can choose an envelope at random and complete the suggestion inside!
THEMED JARS
Set up a few different jars, each with their own 'theme' (e.g. romantic, adventure, foodie, budget-friendly). After the event, the happy couple can choose ideas from the jar that best suits their mood or interests at that particular time.
This also works for seasons, holidays (Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, etc.) or even experiences such as cooking (a different recipe is supplied by each guest and the couple can make their way through them all at their leisure).
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
The game doesn't have to end at the hen party or bridal shower. Oh no. Challenge your beautiful soon-to-be married friends. If they can do every single date idea provided (and give photo evidence!) they will receive a special gift from the bridal party.
Handy Hint:
To win this gift, the couple needs to send you photo proof from each date. Perhaps put these images into a special book - which can be gifted to the Mr & Mrs with a hamper of food and a cheeky bottle of wine. They can then have a night in together eating, drinking and reminiscing on all the fun they've had!
POPSICLE STICKS
Replace your paper date cards with the humble popsicle stick. A unique twist on this wonderful game that gives the jar a great overall 'look' once filled!
THE STORY JAR
A game within a game. Once everyone has written a date down, ask the bride-to-be to read each of the ideas out loud to the group. She can then guess who wrote what, and find out the story behind it (why was that their best date?!).
Drinks On The Side:
If you want to take this up a notch - for every correct guess, the group take a sip of their drink. For every wrong guess, the bride must take a sip.

What is a Downton Abbey themed party without a little drama? Add just the right amount to your day with a DIY 1920s murder mystery escape room kit. The one we used can be played from any location (perfect for hen parties and bridal showers alike!).
Where to Host Your Downton Abbey Party
Old world charm can be brought to any venue, so don't stress too much about where you're hosting the event (we'll share lots of tips and tricks for setting the scene throughout this article).
However, if you want your party to be as realistic as possible, here are some venue ideas with vintage ambiance aplenty:
However, if you want your party to be as realistic as possible, here are some venue ideas with vintage ambiance aplenty:
- Period houses: Homes of friends or family that reflect this period in time. If the owners are associated with the party and happy to host, this could be an amazing and low cost option.
- Vintage venues: Restaurants, pubs, function venues or halls that are inspired by the Roaring 20s.
- Retro stays: Accommodation with Downton Abbey vibes (majestic dining rooms, art-deco inspired furniture, beautiful gardens).
- The great outdoors: A park or garden that allows celebrations (perfect for an outdoor high tea - just check for restrictions... and toilets!)
- A castle: An actual castle that allows guests (it will be like you've whisked party goers away to Highclere castle itself - you can't get much better than that).
Impress Downton Abbey Fans With Your Setup
Time to transform your venue into a lavish 1920s wonderland. The following tips will add old-fashioned charm to even the newest of builds.
AFTERNOON OR HIGH TEA PARTY
Tiered serving stands, tea cups, tea pots and fresh flowers will instantly bring your Downton Abbey tea party to life. Click here for a step-by-step table setup guide.
Should the weather permit, you may prefer to take the party outside, where the beauty of your surrounds can be enjoyed. If doing so, place a few smaller tables around the garden, each with their own cloth and setting.
To top it all off, decorate with fabric bunting or floral garlands, and place woven baskets (overflowing with flowers) where a little extra 'pizazz' is needed.
Now for the best part - a delectable range of sweet and savoury treats, paired with a variety of teas.
Fill those serving trays and tiered stands with scones, jams, cream, egg salad tea sandwiches, cakes, and any other delightful nibbles that the Dowager Countess of Grantham would approve of.
Then sip, eat and gossip the afternoon away!
Handy Tip:
Place cards can be used at your afternoon tea party. Write 'Lady' before each name (e.g. 'Lady Jess') for a fun Downton Abbey-esque touch.
FORMAL DINNER PARTY
Hosting a multi-course meal? Be sure to meet the Crawley family’s expectations when it comes to setting the table. Click here to learn where each fork, knife and plate goes.
Then, to evoke a mood that would impress even the most prestigious of guests, add some greenery, flickering candles on tiered stands, and fresh blooms in antique vases.

TABLE DECOR IDEAS INSPIRED BY DOWNTON ABBEY:
- Long, majestic dining table. Create the 'look' by sliding a couple of trestles (or other long tables) together and covering in a beautiful white cloth.
- White table cloths
- Napkins
- Coupe glasses (if you don't have these, champagne flutes/wine glasses are perfectly fine)
- Tiered candle holders
- Long, flickering candles
- Greenery
- Fresh flowers (such as roses)
- Vintage/Downton Abbey themed menus
- Vintage/Downton Abbey themed place cards (go one step further by writing 'Lady' before each name – e.g. ‘Lady Chloe’, as pictured below)
And finally, finish off your 20th century style table with a delicious assortment of food.
You can either focus on serving meals with a Downton twist (such as roast beef, oysters and Yorkshire pudding), or create your own combinations of dishes (such as a mix of the bride-to-be's favourites - adding a sweet and personalised touch to her day).
Handy Tip:
Serving various courses at your party will mean a great deal of cooking for the host. So it's important to think about the night and how involved you want to be in this part of it.
Would you like to take it all on yourself? Ask for help from the bridesmaids? Book a catering company? Organise a private chef? Or even coordinate a pot luck dinner?
You could also hire a (topless) waiter to help with serving! A bit of cheek for your royal affair.
ELEGANT COCKTAIL SOIREE
Set a glamorous scene indoors with candles (both in mason jars and on tiered stands), flowers, pearl draped centrepieces, and fabric bunting. You might also like to add some vintage mirrors, large rugs, peacock feathers, Crawley family portraits (Google is your friend here) and cocktail stations.
Hosting outside? Keep it light, bright and fun with floral garlands, fabric bunting and twinkle lights. If your budget allows, large, white tents were oftentimes found at these wonderous occasions.
Handy Tip:
For those setting up cocktail stations, make sure they are overflowing with martini glasses, champagne coupes, shakers, gin, champagne and an assortment of mixers.
Can you spot the sneaky Escape Room clue within our cocktail station below?
After More Décor Ideas?
The following items draw inspiration from the early 1920s (as well as the Downton Abbey series itself):

Once you’ve transformed the space, guests will be forgiven for thinking they’ve arrived at the real Downton Abbey, ready to party with the Crawley family themselves!
Handy Tip:
When it comes to sourcing decorations, we recommend asking before purchasing. You never know what treasures your friends and family have hiding in their homes. No luck with this? Many of the items mentioned above can also be found at op shops, garage sales and in antique stores.
DIY QUOTE DECORATIONS
We used quotes from the TV series in our decorating (see images below).
These were lovingly created with Canva, using one of their vintage backdrops and a vintage font.
Not only were these signs cheap and easy to make, but they were also great for hanging on the wall, placing on food/drink tables, and for using as photobooth props!

Would She Rather (Quick Overview)
An engaging activity that adds a touch of laughter to your celebration! To play, give participants a range of fun, amusing and thought-provoking questions. The catch? They have 2 answers to choose from, and they HAVE to pick one (that they think the bride would prefer). For example, 'would you rather be kissed every day or hugged every day?'. As you can see, these questions will reveal a little about each guests' personality (as well as the bride) in a fun and memorable way. Want to mix things up a little? Add fun penalties for those who don't answer questions within a time limit, tailor questions to your event theme, make it all about the big day (e.g. 'would you rather fall whilst walking down the aisle or fall whilst having your first dance?'), or throw a spanner in the works by finishing the game with a few saucy questions!
How to Play the 'Would She Rather' Game:
YOU WILL NEED:
Playing cards (more info below) and some pens or pencils.
PREPARATION:
First of all, get those playing cards ready! You can do this by either downloading some pre-made options (click here) or by creating your own.
To make the cards yourself, first put together a list of ‘Would She Rather’ questions. These can be about sports, foods, drinks, holidays, etc. Get creative and have fun with it.
Handy Tip:
Keep your hen in mind when putting together the list. Try to pick questions that will bring back memories, or questions that you know will make her smile/laugh.

Once you have your questions sorted, type them up and print them off. To help you with the overall layout, we’ve included example cards below.
HOW TO PLAY:
To play, hand each guest/team a card and explain that filling it out is simple – all you have to do is circle the option you think the bride-to-be would prefer.

Alternative Ways to Play This Bridal 'Would She Rather' Game:
SPICE IT UP
Throw a spanner in the works by adding a couple of dirty questions at the end. Nobody will see it coming and the shock will result in a great deal of laughter!
Handy Tip:
If you do decide to spice it up a bit, just make sure you know your audience. If anyone is easily offended, or there are underage guests attending, steer clear of the raunchier options. Opting for questions that add cheek without being too naughty, instead!
PENALTIES
Set a time limit. If someone in the group can't make a decision before the time is up, they are 'penalised'! This could mean taking a sip of their drink, downing a shot, or completing a funny dare.
Alternative:
Rather than a penalty, the person who can't decide in time is eliminated from the game. Whoever is left standing at the end is your winner (or winners!).
THEME IT
Create your questions around the event theme (e.g. burlesque, wine, pirates, the 90's) or topics that the guest of honour loves (such as food, movies or travel).
WEDDING BELLS
Speaking of themes, why not tailor the entire game to the wedding itself! Rather than asking questions about day-to-day life, see what your bride would rather when it comes to one of the BIGGEST days in her life.

The A to Z Race (Quick Overview)
The word challenge with a competitive streak! To play, participants write as many wedding related words as possible within a set time limit. The catch? Each word has to start with a different letter of the alphabet (for example, W could be 'Wedding', B could be 'Bride', etc.). The goal is to think quickly and creatively, in an attempt to have the MOST answers when the buzzer goes off (and in turn be crowned winner). Want to mix things up a little? Up the cheek factor by putting a dirty spin on things, make it personal (by using cards with the bride's name, and participants writing words that relate to her), or theme the game with a topic that the guest of honour loves (travelling or animals, for example).
How to Play the A to Z Game
YOU WILL NEED:
Playing cards (more info below), pens or pencils and some form of timer (egg timer, stop watch, phone - they all do the trick).
PREPARATION:
For starters, you need to prepare game cards by either downloading pre-made options or creating your own.
If you're making the cards yourself, simply put together a page that lists each letter of the alphabet, along with writing space. To help get you started, see the example below:

Once you've got your cards sorted, print enough off for your celebration (whether that be per guest or per team) and store away until the big day.
HOW TO PLAY:
When it comes time to play, hand each participant a card and explain the following rules:

HOW TO PLAY:
When it comes time to play, hand each participant a card and explain the following rules:
- Write fast: on 'GO!', each person/team writes as many wedding related words as possible.
- Match words with letters: words have to begin with the letter they're next to (e.g. W could be 'Wedding', B could be 'Bride', and so on).
- It's timed: there is a time limit. This game card is to be filled out in 4 minutes (pressure's on!).
- Winner/s will be revealed: the person/team with the most answers once the buzzer goes off, wins.
Alternative Ways to Play
CLEAN OR DIRTY, THE CHOICE IS YOURS
Want to make this an A to Z bridal shower game? We suggest sticking with the 'wedding related' words. Groom, Bride, Wedding Party - these are answers you can expect to see.
Want to spice things up a bit? Ask guests to write as many dirty/naughty words as possible instead. The answers will be as wild as your guests' imagination - prepare for some beauties!

MAKE IT PERSONAL
Rather than using the alphabet, you could create game cards using your bride-to-be's name instead. Guests' can then fill in 'dirty words', 'wedding related words', or even 'hen/bachelorette party words' next to each letter.
For a more personal touch, ask that guests write down words that represent the bride-to-be. For example, F for Fun, H for happy, and so on.
PICK A TOPIC
Is there a topic your bride-to-be loves more than anything else? Why not run with it? Dog breeds, makeup, animals, alcoholic beverages, holiday destinations - the options are endless.
Handy Tip:
If you're hosting a themed event, you may like to incorporate it into the game. For example, spooky words for a Halloween inspired party, frosty words for a Winter celebration, Christmas words for a Chrissy themed party, or pirate words for a Pirate themed party.

Party Time Capsule Ideas (Quick Overview)
A sweet box of memories made by your favourite people! Starting with a container of choice (kraft card box, large jar, personalised box), slowly create your time capsule with beautiful mementos, photos, recipes, newspaper clippings, important pieces of information, handwritten notes and more. At the end of the celebration, seal the box; only opening it again on a designated date (e.g. first wedding anniversary). Want to mix things up a little? You might like to create a video time capsule instead, add some cheeky bits & pieces (18+ games, love coupons, cheeky date ideas) or even turn it into a book (by sticking mementos into a scrapbook!).
How to Organise Your Party Time Capsule
YOU WILL NEED:
A box - this could be a kraft card box, colored card box, large jar, or even a personalised box.
You will also need bits and pieces to fill the box (find out more below). These can be brought to the party by guests or created at the celebration.
PREPARATION:
Before the big day, put the call-out to party goers asking them to bring along a little something for your hen’s time capsule container.
Explain that this special keepsake will be sealed after the party and gifted to the bride-to-be – ready to be opened on a designated date (the couple’s first wedding anniversary, for example).
Guests may choose to wrap their gift if they want to keep it a surprise from everyone (including the host!).
Alongside these goodies, you may also like to organise a few written activities (that can be completed at the celebration and popped in the box). Date Ideas and Favourite Memories are just two of many options that are perfect for this. For more choices, you can view our list of hen party games by clicking here.
And finally, a polaroid camera is a wonderful way to add special moments from the actual celebration. Happy snaps can be taken throughout the event, and placed straight into the time capsule. Take a few sneaky snaps that your bride-to-be doesn’t get to see – they will make for a beautiful surprise when she opens the box down the track.
TIME CAPSULE ITEMS GUESTS MAY CHOOSE TO BRING:
- Photos: formal and candid shots from the bachelorette, bridal shower or wedding. Childhood photos, teen snaps, and any other photographs from years gone by that feature the bride, the groom, or both! For extra sentimental value, a little message can be written on the back of these images (explaining the story behind them).
- Heartfelt letters: express your feelings, hopes and dreams for the happy couple. These letters could come from parents, grandparents, siblings, extended family members and/or friends.
- Recipes: write down your favourite recipe (for the couple to cook together)
- Information: important pieces of information such as the Bachelorette or bridal shower invite, wedding invitation or even the wedding program.
- Favorite things: include items that you know the couple loves as this point in time. For example, something to do with their favourite movie, food, restaurant or even picnic spot
- Small mementos: any items from the day that may spark happy memories are a great inclusion! This could be a piece of confetti, a ticket stub, a wine cork from the toast, or even a dried flower from the floral displays or bouquets
- Newspaper clippings: what interesting or funny things were also happening in the world on their special day? Collect clippings from newspapers on the day of the Bachelorette, bucks party and wedding.
- Current trends: similar to news headlines, what's currently trending in the world? Make a list of the most popular trends, references and even songs that can be looked back on for years to come.
- Playlist: include a list of tracks played at your celebration for sentimental purposes (you never know when the happy couple might want to bust it out again!)
ITEMS YOU CAN ADD ON THE DAY OF THE PARTY:
- Photos: add photos from the acutal event
- Videos: from the day (on a USB – added after the event). A video of the setup, funny messages from guests, dancing, etc.
- Games: written games played on the day (e.g. date night ideas, favourite memories, He Said She Said cards/videos, etc.)
Making the Time Capsule Happen!
- Step 1: collect gifts, notes and goodies brought to the celebration by guests and place them aside
- Step 2: collect written game cards, photographs, etc. at the celebration and place them aside
- Step 3: after the event, put any additional videos/photos from the bridal shower/hen do onto a USB
- Step 4: add contents to a special box (or boxes, depending on how many items you have) and wrap it up/seal it. You can either gift this to your best friend straight away (with strict instructions that it’s not to be opened until the specified date!), or hold onto it.
Handy Tip:
If you’re happy to wait a little longer before sealing up the box, include bits and pieces from their wedding day as well.

HAND IT OVER
When their first wedding anniversary rolls around, deliver a bottle of wine and some gourmet nibbles to the happy couple, along with their time capsule. The bride and groom can then enjoy a special date night where they look back on incredible memories from days gone by!
Alternative Ways to Create Your Time Capsule
DIGITAL TIME CAPSULE
Set up a document or platform where guests' can post photos, video messages, written messages and more. This can be added to in real-time and in the year following the wedding.
On the couple's first anniversary, provide them with the link (and password) to access their digital time capsule. Here they will be welcomed with ALL the fun, laughter and support of their nearest and dearest; a BEAUTIFUL celebration of their love in one space!
ADD SOME CHEEK
For those who want to get a bit cheeky with the capsule, here are some alternative gift options:
- Cheeky predictions (‘the happy couple will have consummated their marriage at least two times on their wedding night’, for example)
- Naughty date ideas (to keep the flame burning in their second year of marriage).
- 18+ games
- Love coupons
GET THE GROOM INVOLVED
Let your hen’s other half in on the plan, and ask him to put together a few extra goodies for the time capsule. This could be a letter to his bride-to-be, a bit about their relationship at this point in time, what they want to do in their future, bucket list items, etc.
Not only will these little bits and pieces be an extra special surprise for your hen, but also for the groom. Reading back notes from one of the most magical times in their relationship is sure to bring a tear to their eyes, and remind them of the love they share.
MAKE A TIME CAPSULE PHOTO BOOK
Rather than putting bits and pieces into a keepsake box, scan each item and create a special photo book. There are so many online platforms who make this process easy - simply upload images, create fun layouts, add text (if you wish), and order.
For those with creative souls, you may like to put the items into a scrapbook instead.
