A successful marriage is made up of SO many different 'ingredients'. And through experiences (whether it be a healthy relationship you're currently in, or a past relationship you've learnt from), each guest will have their own tips (or 'ingredients', if you will!) for creating a happy marriage. So why not take advantage of this knowledge, and capture it while you can?!

That's where this wonderful game comes in.

Fun and interactive, your best friends will love having the chance to put pen to paper; sharing their wisdom. And after the party? The bride and her partner will have an abundance of tips, tricks and ideas to help them create the 'happily ever after' of their dreams.

ADVICE FOR THE BRIDE GAME (QUICK OVERVIEW)

Advice for the Bride is a popular game that involves collecting heartfelt and fun tips, tricks, and well-wishes for the bride. To play, guests' write down a message or piece of advice onto a card. At the end of the celebration, these pieces of advice are put together in a scrapbook, box or book and gifted to the happy couple (along with a bottle of wine or some chocolates, if you wish!). The bride and her partner can then enjoy a date night together, going through the thoughtful notes they've received from family and friends.

Playing the 'Advice' Game

YOU WILL NEED:
Advice to new bride cards, pens/pencils, and guests' who are willing to share their words of wisdom!

Optional:
A sign can be used to highlight the game space and draw party-goers to the table. You may also like to set up a special 'Newlywed Tip Jar' (or box) where each piece of advice can be stored.

PREPARATION:
Start by creating or sourcing your game cards. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Pre-made cards: download and print done-for-you designs
  • DIY advice cards: on a computer, create your own advice card design. Print off at your local print shop before the event.
  • Paper and pens: Leave out small, blank pieces of paper for guests' to write on

Now that the cards are sorted,  it's time to set your table!

Pick a space that is easy to see and access. Place your table there, along with the game cards, pens and jar/box.

If you'd like to highlight the fact that there is a game set up, we suggest framing and displaying an 'Advice and Wishes' (or similar) sign. This can either be placed next to the table or on the table itself.

Handy Hint:
Leave out game instructions. This extra bit of preparation will mean party-goers can take part in this activity at any time, without you having to explain what to do. Win/win!

HOW TO PLAY
Put simply, guests' leave their favourite tips, tricks and words of encouragement for the happy couple. The suggestions will no doubt range form truly heartfelt advice to incredibly funny advice!

Worth Noting:
As the table has been set up before the big day, it's a game that can be played at everyone's leisure. That being said, if you notice that it's getting no love, perhaps make a quick announcement, highlighting the fact that it is there. This in turn will prompt everyone to leave their little nuggets of wisdom!
EXAMPLE PIECES OF ADVICE INCLUDE:
  • Even great marriages are hard work!
  • Always say 'I love you' at the end of the day (or before falling asleep)
  • Make sure you continue to spend quality time with each other, even when life gets a little crazy
  • Learn each other's love languages. Doing so helps couples understand each other, which in turn keeps the fun and love in long-term relationships
  • Little things make a big impact (e.g. making your partner a coffee in the morning or surprising them with breakfast in bed)
  • Don't forget to take time for YOU! Self care is important
  • Laugh together as often as you can
  • Never stop dating each other
  • Create fun traditions and make memories together

Handy Tip:
Following the event, have the advice cards bound or stick them into a scrapbook). Gift to the couple on their wedding day!

Alternative Ways to Play:

USE PROMPTS
Why not provide a range of 'advice' cards, each with their own category? This would result in a variety of different opinions, tips and experiences for the happy couple to take on during their relationship.

Some example categories include 'best advice for a happy marriage', 'funny marriage advice', 'Tips for tackling tough times' and 'Different Ways to Spend Date Night'.

FILL IN THE GAPS
Use a mad-libs style template for a humorous (or heartfelt) piece of advice! The results are sure to be unexpected and fun.

VIDEO MESSAGES
A fun twist on the classic game. Set up a video booth, where guests can record short videos offering marriage advice, tips, tricks, congratulations, memories or any other messages they would like to share with the happy couple.

After the party, compile these short clips into one beautiful keepsake video!

CHANGE THE FOCUS... TO DATES!
A simple way to stay connected to your partner (no matter how long you've been together), is to take time to truly be with them. That's right - the good ol' fashioned 'date night'!

So, rather than focusing on marriage as a whole, get party-goers to dig deep on their dating knowledge. From special events, concerts and movies, to chilled nights on the couch; the newlyweds will love experiencing the fun, sweet and exciting ideas their friends have suggested for them.
