You've been nominated as the matron of honour and it's your responsibility to organise the Hen's Day. Now comes the hardest part... where to from here? You start searching for Hen Party ideas or activities to get the group out. With so much to choose from, it can be a daunting task. But then you come across an option where a lot of the planning is done for you: private wine tours in beautiful locations such as the Yarra Valley!
WHY A PRIVATE WINE TOUR?
When you think of a hen party, it's all about having fun, creating new memories, sharing new experiences and, as a bonus, it involves wine - right?
With a private winery tour, you can expect all of this and more!
Hosted and coordinated from start to finish, all the leg work will be done for you. Meaning, as an organiser, there is very little for you to do. Just confirm your numbers and let your tour operator know what you'd like included to suit the group budget.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON PRIVATE WINE TOURS
The door-to-door service will take you winery hopping where you can enjoy scenic views and wine tastings at popular and boutique wineries.
You get your own driver and exclusive access to the tour vehicle; no sharing with other groups. The hosted packages are there to facilitate the day for you and are always available to take group photos if you wish.
There will be so much to sample and so many ways to add colour to your day! In the Yarra Valley, for example, cheese, chocolate, scrumptious foods, make your own flower crown classes, sweeping views and many photo opportunities are all available. And with everything behind the scenes taken care of for you (such as coordinating venue bookings, calculating travel time between venues, and planning the itinerary to your criteria), all you have to do is be ready for the fun at pick up time!
FRIENDS WITH DIETARY REQUIREMENTS?
Not a problem! Private winery tours can assist in organising the finer details to make sure everyone is catered for and does not miss out on the fun. Just let your host know before the event if anyone in the group is vegan, vegetarian, pregnant or has food intolerances.
Our goal is to accommodate everyone, and we find that passing on all relevant information to the wineries is important for a smooth day out.
LOOKING FOR A WOW FACTOR?
How about having your Hen's event captured from the sky? That's right, drone video and photography! Long after the day is over, re-live the highlights with a takeaway video clip which is offered by Nep, a licenced drone operator at 'Kangaroo Hopping Tours'!
MAKE IT MEMORABLE
The hen's day is the second notable event before the wedding day. It's a day where you let your hair down, get to know the closest people of the bride, share secrets, laugh from the belly and have fun! Make it memorable with offerings from the Yarra Valley (or, if you're in another state, the closest wine region) and the people that are there to facilitate it all. No matter what the group budget is, you are guaranteed to have a great time!

A wine tour is a great way to celebrate a hens party; as opposed to going out for dinner or lunch, it really gets people mingling. And the fact that you get to visit lots of different locations keeps things a lot more interesting. Plus if you are looking to get crazy, but aren’t that keen on doing so in front of Grandma, it is an excellent way to have a nice day with the older ladies of the family, get a little bit tipsy, and then head out later where the less tame fun can begin.
If you are looking at planning a hens party wine tour, below are our top tips for a great day out.
TIP 1: MAKE THE BRIDE FEEL SPECIAL
Let her know she doesn’t need to worry about anything.
It’s the little things that add up to make it a great day. Carry her wine and belongings for her, play her favourite songs, don’t let her buy a drink at all. Let the wineries know that it is her special day so they can make a big deal out of her.
TIP 2: GET THE DIFFERENT GROUPS TOGETHER
With many different circles of friends and family attending, it’s great to get them mingling early; and a wine tour is perfect for this. For example, go out of your way to introduce the groom’s family to the bride’s friends, play some ice-breaker games (some ideas later in the article), and take every opportunity to talk to people you don’t know.
TIP 3: PICK THE RIGHT SPOTS FOR YOUR WINE TOUR
While a little bit of information on the wines is always welcome, you don’t want to be lectured on every single vintage and wine-making technique. The best stops are in pretty locations that are relaxed and fun, with plenty of chances to mingle and socialise.
Laughs are the key to a good day, so some fun wineries always go down well.
TIP 4: MAKE HER A PERSONALISED PLAYLIST
Make a playlist of great songs that will bring back memories and get the party started. Having a rocking bus on the way home is one of the most fun parts of the day!
TIP 5: PICK SOME FUN GAMES (BUT DON’T OVERDO IT)
All wine regions are 1 hour plus from Melbourne CBD, so there is time to play a game or two on the way down.
From experience, 1 or 2 games is generally enough as the wine tour is an event in itself; plus people get a bit annoyed if you keep interrupting their wine and conversation.
Some of our favourite bus games include (you can Google them for full rules and explanation):
Everyone writes down a memory they have with the bride-to-be. One of the bridesmaids then reads out each memory and the bride must guess who wrote them.
DID YOU KNOW?
Get the groom to pre-answer a series of questions. The bride-to-be must answer the same questions to see how they match. Example, ‘Where was your first kiss?’
PASS THE PARCEL
Not just for kids anymore! Played on the bus, add naughty or useful gifts under each layer; music is played and when the music stops, a layer is unwrapped and a prize revealed.
Great fun, and very social. Versions include ‘forbidden words’ or ‘stripper names’. This can be set-up on the bus on the way down, but lasts the whole day. It’s a good way to get people laughing and socialising.
